ask a writer
The Ask A Writer service is available for all writers to ask questions of general or specific content. Each question will be asked anonymously, and replied to in a general manner. Readers and writers should know that no question is a dumb question, and each will be answered, regardless of what it is asking. If a question can not be answered, it will be held in the question bank until a guest can answer it.
Much like crits, there will be special guests that will answer any questions. If there are questions specific to their stories or characters, they may be asked as well. Please select the ‘guest’ option on the form, otherwise the default will be in place.
Guest Writers Available: No.

Q: Can one sentence count as a paragraph or is there a set limit of sentences to be considered a paragraph?
A: My English teacher always told me that a paragraph should consist of three or more sentences and I still use that as a rule of thumb. You may use single sentences if you know how to use them properly. The problem with a lot of writers when they use the single sentences is that they use it for dramatic effect, which they also use a fragment in doing so. If you are going for the dramatic appeal, it works just as well if you lead up to it and place it at the end of your paragraph. Don't get carried away with placing one sentence every other line because it's improper and may be unappealing to certain readers. Try using three as a rule of thumb and see if the 'dramatic' sentence at the end of the paragraph works as well as if it were its own line.

"Writing…is my life. I love writing so much that I tend to disregard everything else that’s happening in the world just to spend time with myself and my characters. Sometimes I wish I could be “normal” and then I realize that being who I am, and what I am, makes me special because, if I think really hard on it, I know myself. I know every little thing that there is to know about me because tiny bits of my persona are in every last stinking one of my characters. I’ve been wounded with very few negative comments and have grown from them, maturing as both a person and a writer. There’s no substitute for the rush of getting comments on a story, or the serenity of being alone with people that aren’t real. I know that I have potential; I just really want other people to see it too."
